What's Up With The Deer?

He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights.
(Psalms 18:33)
Shamanism is the world’s oldest healing tradition, and is found in all cultures on the Earth. Shaman work with their allies—the animal spirits. “In the shamanic belief everything is alive and carries with it power and wisdom. Power animals are an essential component of shamanic practice. They are the helping spirit which add to the power of the shaman and are essential for success in any venture undertaken by the shaman.
Shamans believe that everyone has power animals – animal spirits which reside with each individual adding to their power and protecting them from illness, acting similarly to a guardian angel. Each power animal that you have increases your power so that illnesses or negative energy cannot enter your body. The spirit also lends you the wisdom of its kind. A hawk spirit will give you hawk wisdom, and lend you some of the attributes of hawk”.[1]
Early on in my spiritual awakening, it was brought powerfully into my perception that it’s all connected. This interconnectedness can be accessed when we put ourselves into the right frequency, vibration or state. As I have followed the cues on my journey, strikingly marked by loud synchronicities, the deer revealed itself as my highest and most important guide. They showed up in the most auspicious moments; heralding breakthroughs and opening doors to the next level of awareness; often taking my breath away.
There are so many instances of this that I would not even begin to attempt to share them with you. But I will share one. On a leisurely Saturday afternoon a few years ago, I took a walk to a local trail in the woods where I consistently have hiked for several years. It is here, among many other spots, that I encounter deer no matter what time I choose to go. Four deer in particular, had become quite comfortable with my presence and would come within ten to fifteen feet of me watching and lingering as I meditated for 20-30 minutes while seated on a rock at this secluded place in the woods. There was without a doubt a sharing of energy happening.
On this day, while walking back home, I was greeted by a neighbor who was doing some lawn work. Her first question was, “hey, how are you, where did you go for a walk?” As I began to describe the place, it was immediately obvious she was unfamiliar with it. Amazingly, its about a quarter of a mile from our street but many people do not know it exists. I told her how peaceful the trail was and then proclaimed “and there is a group of deer there who I kind of have a thing with, an understanding”. What happened next, as they say “you just can’t make up!”
We were standing on her front lawn, my back facing my house just two doors down, and she having a clear view of my house and yard as we spoke. Suddenly, a look of disbelief and awe came over her face proclaiming, “OMG, look there they are!” Turning, I too was taken aback, the deer I had left just ten minutes earlier were now gathered on my front lawn watching me talk to the neighbor. Pointing to her arms now, she showed me the goose bumps that had instantly formed up and down both arms. It was a surreal moment.
This brief story, I share with you, is one of many equally synchronistic experiences I have had with deer. Needless to say, I got the message and recognized my connection with this animal’s spirit. It has led me to trust their appearances and to ask them to reveal their messages.
